Leather stampede strings for cowboy hats with sweatbands

How to keep a cowboy hat secure in the wind with a leather stampede string.

Stampede strings can be braided or plain leather. This attachment style uses cotter pins and split rings at the sweatband stitching, without piercing the sweatband. Hats with eyelets need a different fitting system.

A windy-day dilemma

There must be a better way to keep your hat on.

There is. It's called a stampede string.

Instead of tying a rope around your hat, a purpose-made leather chin strap helps keep it secure and lets you adjust the fit.

What is a stampede string?

A stampede string is a leather strap or cord worn beneath the chin to help keep a cowboy hat from blowing away. Also called a hat chin strap, cowboy hat chin strap or cowboy hat strap, it combines a practical purpose with a traditional Western look. Leather stampede strings can be hand-braided or made from plain leather strips.

How do you attach a chin strap to a cowboy hat without making holes?

For a compatible hat with an internal sweatband, LeatherByPeter's sweatband-mounted stampede strings use small split rings and cotter pins. The cotter pins are positioned between the hat body and the sweatband, between the existing stitching. They do not pierce the sweatband or require new holes. The hat must have a suitable construction for this method.

If your cowboy hat has side eyelets in the brim, choose a purpose-made chin strap for eyelet hats instead. The two attachment systems are not interchangeable.

Braided or plain leather stampede strings: which should you choose?

Both designs can perform the same job. A braided leather stampede string offers a textured Western appearance, while a plain leather chin strap has a simpler, understated look. Choose according to the style of your hat and your personal preference, rather than assuming one is always better.

How do you adjust a leather chin strap?

Adjustable leather stampede strings can use different kinds of sliding knots or sliders made from materials such as leather, wood or metal. A decorative Gaucho knot is one possible design, not the only one. Moving the knot or slider changes how the strap sits beneath the chin. Adjust it for a comfortable, secure fit without pulling the hat downward.

What to check before choosing

How does it attach?

Cotter pins slide between the hat body and the sweatband, between existing stitches, rather than being pushed through the sweatband. Small split rings connect the leather strap.

How is it adjusted?

A movable slider lets you adjust how the strap sits below the chin.

What if your hat has eyelets?

Eyelet chin straps use a different attachment method. See that separate guide before buying.

Frequently asked questions about leather stampede strings

Can I add a chin strap to a cowboy hat that has no eyelets?

Often, yes. A compatible cowboy hat with an internal sweatband can take a cotter-pin leather stampede string without adding holes. Check the hat's construction before fitting it.

Do I need to remove or pierce the sweatband?

No. For the LeatherByPeter cotter-pin attachment, the pin goes between the hat body and the sweatband at the existing stitching. The sweatband is not removed or pierced.

Will fitting a stampede string damage my hat?

The method is designed to avoid puncturing the sweatband or making new holes, but suitability depends on the individual hat. Check the stitching and attachment points carefully; if you are unsure, ask before installation.

How long should a leather stampede string be?

Length is largely a matter of personal preference. LeatherByPeter has made custom chin straps as short as 45 cm (about 18 in) and as long as 75 cm (about 30 in). These are examples of past orders, not fixed minimum or maximum lengths.

Can I customize the fringe or ends of my leather chin strap?

Yes. Some customers prefer longer leather fringes, others shorter fringes, and some want no fringe at all, choosing simple knotted ends instead. If you have a particular length, color, finish or another detail in mind, contact LeatherByPeter through Etsy to discuss a custom order.

Can I use a cotter-pin strap on a hat with side eyelets?

Eyelet hats have a different fitting system. Choose a strap specifically made for existing brim eyelets; see our eyelet chin strap guide.
